Clairo Put My Heart In A Sling
Today, Anaheim is a magical place and it’s not just because it’s home of Disneyland. Although it’s saddening that Clairo played two shows in Anaheim instead of one in San Diego, I had to come through regardless to see this magical performance in the flesh. I’ve seen Clairo a few times in the past and i’ll be honest, she hasn’t shown me that “wow” factor yet. Tonight on April 4th however, everything changed.
I was excited to see the opener Arlo Parks however she wasn’t performing at the Anaheim shows. Instead, Salami Rose Joe Louis was the opener and even though they weren’t the opener I expected, they definitely gave good vibes for the rest of the night. Once the Salami Rose Joe Louis finished their set, Clairo finally graced the stage. With a medley of bops such as “Bambi”, “Zinnias”, “Bags”, “Amoeba”, “Pretty Girl”, and “Sofia”, the setlist was heaven sent, even without “4EVER” not performed. Her set was more chill and acoustic than I expected but she still killed it nonetheless
I’ve seen her at Coachella and opening up for Tame Impala in the past and she’s had a decent stage presence. Now is a different story and her current stage presence is next level. She knew how to keep the crowd satisfied with a harmonic balance of the upbeat and more slower paced songs. She did a fantastic job of curating the set list and I was impressed with how she got some of the songs to fade into each other. It was like listening to a recording of a live album except I was actually there. In my humble opinion, the ambience with the lighting was just perfect. Even though it was the most minimalistic set of her’s that i’ve seen so far but the vibes for each song felt just right.
There were moments throughout the concert where some of the audience were talking while she was performing her slower songs, which was mad disrespectful in my opinion, but in the end, I believe everyone was safe left satisficed with the songs ranging from bedroom pop to the ballads. There was so much right with the show with the backdrops for each song being so well done, the atmosphere making me feel like I was in a special place, and of course, Clairo’s beautiful singing. It was a different mood and feel compared to her more bedroom pop albums but every talented singer has a distinctive era change, for better or worse but Clairo was in the sweet spot with ease. Clairo has been the best she’s ever been performance wise and I would recommend seeing her from the bottom of my heart.
