Gryffin Goes Nuts at Soma
Written by: Delfina Glover
I pulled up to Soma about 30 minutes before Gryffin was set to go on stage. The parking lot was packed and the line was incredibly long. After a minor debacle at the door, I made it inside the venue. I stood on my tippy toes and tried to see as far as I could, watching people continue to trickle in, the venue filling quickly all the way to the back. I had never seen Gryffin perform a live set before and had no idea what to expect. His two band members stepped on stage and shortly after he came out like a whirlwind and everyone immediately was dancing. Sporting his usual Gryffin #7 jersey and across-the-forehead headband, the simple yet kind of uniform of sorts for him. Many of his die-hard fans were wearing the jersey as well.
Throughout the show, the energy was insane. You could not tell that this was his last stop on the tour. He performed like it was the very first night, eager to begin his journey. The lights accompanying his mix were absolutely mesmerizing. Switching from extremely bright, to red, to blue and then to a dark and moody space scene, the visuals kept you engaged and wanting more. Gryffin switched from keys to midi board to guitar, showing his true instrumental talents. His cover of a true classic, “Mr. Brightside”, had the crowd singing every word and leaving it with a hard drop with heavy bass that made the ground shake.
Gryffin and his two band members enacted an amazing ODESZA-style drum kit when he played a medley of their songs. The lights and passion were incredible, illuminating Soma all the way to the very back. Gryffin’s fans are extremely loyal and gave him the energy right back, feeding him even more for an incredible last stop on the tour.
