It’s been nearly four years since the electrifying Australian electronic music trio RÜFÜS DU SOL have performed in San Diego. A lot can change in four years. America can get a new president and even RÜFÜS DU SOL can release a new album within that time span. Even with with so much that changed with the world, so has RÜFÜS. The group has evolved since the last time they played in San Diego and keep reading to find out how.

The time to acknowledge how they got to perform in San Diego again after all these years, considering how much they have grown since then. It was impressive since the last time RÜFÜS was in San Diego, they performed at the Pechenga Arena which almost every big artists performs at but now they played at North Island Amphitheatre, the biggest venue in the city. The song, backdropped by synchronized, multi-colored lights illuminated them, and was able to convey the feelings expressed by the three members throughout their set.

In 2019, was the first time I heard about RÜFÜS. I was at Coachella and so drained from the heat and dust from the desert air. I took shelter in the Coachella Artic Dome where there was a film sponsored by the company HP with the music curated by RÜFÜS. The experience blew my mind and I could not believe i’ve never heard of the group beforehand. This event instantly made me become a fan of RÜFÜS and i’ve followed their music which led me to this concert.

RÜFÜS DU SOLl performed numerous songs off of Surrender, where I felt was their rawest album yet that gave them a sense of vulnerability previously not seen in any of their previous projects. The songs explored slightly broodier themes, but with lights shining brightly on stage, they were able to reflect the energy and the sense of hopefulness conveyed within each tune. The songs already showcased how great the group is but the visuals and stage production brought this show to another level. Truly seeing them perform live was a spectacle to behold.

“Innerbloom,”, was the finale of their set. The near ten minute banger brought out the crowd’s emotions and even had everyone dancing near the end. One of the other standout songs from the show was “On My Knees,” another track off of Surrender, contains another moving message, but this time layered with a beat at a breakneck pace with steady bass which had everyone grooving and schmooving, even when Tyrone Lindqvist collapsed to his knees on stage during the song. The concert’s memorable moments did not stop there however. RÜFÜS DU SOL played all their classics that enamored so many people into becoming fans in the first place. Another highlight was when giant bursts of confetti that looked similar to snow and epic lasers that shined all over the stage.

The show felt like a mini-rave in a way with all their hits from earlier albums that making the environment exuberant and got people out of their seats to vibe. Their set ended with a banger of an encore hits only like “Treat You Better” and “No Place” from their 2018 album Solace. All in all, it was an amazing night of music, especially for a hump day aka Wednesday. My friend proclaimed “Wednesdays are the new Fridays!” after how magnificent their set was. If there’s one message you should take away from this review, here it is. RÜFÜS DU SOL are one of the premier artists on the entire planet and seeing them live solidified my opinion and I will die on that hill.
