I Became A Big Time Fan After Seeing Big Time Rush & Spencer Sutherland

Big Time Rush & Spencer Sutherland stopped by San Diego for the Forever Tour. Nearing the end of the tour that started in June, both acts arrived to an insane turnout! Waiting in line was a an eye-opener for me with a line that spanned far across the SDSU campus. During the whole show too, the merch booth was always swamped with people. You can tell the fans were waiting for this show eagerly for months with many of them brining in homemade signs to get the attention of any of the members of Big Time Rush! At the outdoor venue of Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, fans didn’t even have to worry about it being too hot and sweaty. With fans all seated and hyped up, the opener finally appeared.

Spencer Sutherland came out and he was dripped out. First impression was that he had great hair and fantastic style. The crowd gave him such a warm reception too. It was surprising not because usually concertgoers are only their for the headliner but Spencer Sutherland is just built different apparently. He started off his set with his song, “Tell Me,” and the crowd was vibing along. This song was only the beginning though.

Sutherland did some crowd work and they were feeling it. He made the fans feel like a part of the show with him acknowledging some of them. The third song he played was a fantastic cover of Elton John’s “Benny and The Jets”. Was a cool cover that and my first time hearing the song but I can tell the crowd loved it because they were eating it up. A little bit later, he asked the crowd if they liked Hannah Montana, which the response was a resounding yes from, the audience! He psyched out the fans though when he said he would be singing his song, “Indigo” instead. Some people were peeved but he made up for it soon enough.

Part way through “Indigo,” the song transitioned into “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus! The crowd erupted with cheers once they figured it out! Spencer also sang his latest song that he released in July, “Everybody,” which was well-received from the audience. After playing “Sweater” and “Chicken Little”, Spencer’s unfortunately had to leave the stage. In less than a hour though, he was able to turn myself and many people at the concert into new fans of his.

After a short break, the huge curtain with the name of the band was hung at the front of the stage. The crowd was clamoring for them to come out and kept shouting, “Big Time Rush!” repeatedly until the curtain finally dropped. When it dropped, there was so much screaming and everyone rose to their feet to catch a glimpse Nickelodeon’s best boy band. The quarter of singers were on top of some massive steps basking in the cheers. Once the music started playing, I was immersed with their dancing. There’s not too many modern American boy bands anymore so it was cool to see them do some synchronized dancing.

It’s crazy to think Big Time Rush is basically this generation’s Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block . You love to see fans get to finally see their favorite artists reunited and see them performing live again. You can’t help to be happy but envious of all the fans in the front that get to see a reunion of this level up front and personal. However I didn’t know that this was only the start as this was just a glimpse of how much care and attention that Big Time Rush provided to everyone at the show.

The group performed their latest song “Dale Pa’Ya,” which they announced was being released next week. I was surprised by the song being a spanglish song but it was undeniably a song to dance to. Big Time Rush even tried to teach everyone how to do a little dance during the song and all the fans were into it. The four guys later took turns to throw some merch into the crowd which I would’ve loved to have since the merch line was always insanely long this night.

Throughout the show, the effects they had for the show were great. Different colored lighting to have the fans locked into the performance and they looked especially sick when there was smoke as well. Once they sang “Confetti Falling,” you can guess what happened. Yup, you guessed it. Confetti shot out into the air and had the whole crowd buzzed with joy. I noticed several fans in the front even picking up some of the pieces of confetti off of the ground as a memento of the show.

Watching them live was such an experience. You couldn’t help but notice how extremely talented all four guys of Big Time Rush are. The boy band probably performed over 20+ songs while dancing most of the time too. Their stamina and charisma were just off the charts. They mixed up between new songs, the classics, and sprinkled in a few covers here and there but the crowd was so enthusiastic and absolutely loved every second of it. Every fan definitely got their money’s worth for this concert.

Once it was time for them to sing their banger of a song, “Worldwide,” Big Time Rush brought out four fans onto the stage. One for each member to just serenade and I would be lying to myself if I didn’t wish that was me. Not too long after that, all of Big Time Rush made their way into the crowd which made the audience go absolutely nutty. People left their seats to try to get closer to the band walking by. It was chaotic but in such a good way! They performed a few more songs while being entrenched in the crowd to give the fans another memorable moment before going back onto the main stage.

Big Time Rush finished the night with a medley of songs that consisted of their original songs, a few cover songs before departing the stage. It didn’t take too long for the fans to bed for an encore and the band happily obliged. The encore started off with the theme song from their self-titled Nickelodeon show, “Big Time Rush,” and their biggest hit, “Boyfriend.” Big Time Rush and Spencer Sutherland brought their A game with amazing music, choreography, and personalities to San Diego. Both sets were filled with incredible, talented performances that left the members of the audience with some great memories along with great tunes. If you have the chance, catch Spencer or BTR live if they’re in your area.
